Last month, at the age of 82, Oscar de la Renta passed away.
Oscar de la Renta, was one of the most renowned clothing designers in the world. Born in Santo Domingo in 1932 and trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo, de la Renta became known the world over in the 1960s as one of the designers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy. An award-winning designer, he worked for Lanvin and Balmain and spent time at Elizabeth Arden before leaving to join the Seventh Avenue company of Jane Derby as partner and designer in 1965 and also designed automobile heiress, Anne Ford's wedding dress in that year. De la Renta was the first Dominican to design for a French couture house and in 2006, the Oscar de la Renta label diversified into bridal wear, followed by fragrance, accessories, and finally home furnishings in 2004.
In the late 1960's de la Renta started his own line and in 1967 married the former French Vogue editor-in-chief, Françoise de Langlade. They were married until she passed away in 1963. After her death, de la Renta adopted a boy from the Dominican Republic and named him Moises and later remarried in 1989. De la Renta was regarded as an unofficial ambassador of the Dominican Republic, his home country, and held a diplomatic passport. He had homes there in Casa de Campo and Punta Cana, in addition to his residence in Kent, Connecticut.
During his life, de la Renta received many accolades and awards, including the Coty Hall of Fame award in 1973 and was also the president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 1973-1976 and again from 1987-1989. Oscar de la Renta's fashion house continues to dress leading figures, from film stars to royalty, to this day.
